Bull Rhythm

Performance

Every strategy here is built on 12-1 momentum, one of the most extensively researched return factors in finance. First documented by Narasimhan Jegadeesh and Sheridan Titman in 1993 and replicated across decades of data and markets worldwide, it ranks stocks by their return over the past twelve months, excluding the most recent month.

The price history used here begins in September 2016, and each strategy needs a year of prices before its first pick, so results start on November 1, 2017. Figures run to the close of Oct 16, 2026. Results after Sep 28, 2026, when the strategies started running live, are live results; earlier results are a backtest, the same rules applied to past prices. Each strategy’s own page lists its holdings and every trade. Key terms explained.

What would your money have done?

Pick an amount and when you would have started. Returns do not depend on the amount; every number below is worked out from the day you choose.

The amount you picture putting in. It only scales the dollar figures: the percentages are the same for $1,000 or $1,000,000.
How much of the account follows the strategy. The rest sits in BIL, a fund of US Treasury bills that mature in 1 to 3 months: close to cash, earning short-term interest. Every time the strategy rebuilds, the account is put back to your split. With 70/30, if the stocks have risen, some of the gain moves into T-bills; if they have fallen, some T-bills are used to buy stocks. A smaller strategy share means smaller falls and smaller gains.
Hindenburg ruleThe best rule from the Hindenburg research: when more than 2.5% of US stocks over $5 make a new 52-week high and more than 2.5% a new 52-week low on the same day, with SPY above its 50-day average, and the split also shows among companies worth more than $300 million (more than 3.0% at new highs and more than 2.0% at new lows) and in at least 3 sectors at each end (more than 2.0% of a sector's stocks), half of the strategy part moves into T-bills at the close six trading days later, and returns 31 trading days after the last such day. Every move appears in the ledger and pays 0.10%. Backtest before go-live, applied day by day after it.
The day your pretend account starts. “Since go-live” counts only the time the strategies have run live, each decision made at that day’s close with the rules unchanged. Earlier periods are a backtest: the same rules applied to past prices.

The dashed grey line is SPY, a fund that tracks the S&P 500, the usual yardstick for US stocks.

Fall from the highest value so far

How far each strategy dropped below its own previous high, from the start you picked. This is what holding on through the bad stretches feels like.

Results before each strategy’s go-live date are a backtest: the rules applied to historical prices, selected after testing many variations on the same decade of data. Backtested performance is hypothetical and may overstate what live trading achieves. Since going live, every decision has been made at the day’s close with the rules unchanged. Much of the backtest gain came from technology stocks, and the weighted strategies can hold a few stocks in large amounts.

CAGR: compound annual growth rate, the steady yearly return that ends at the same value. Volatility: how much the value swings, as a yearly figure (the standard deviation of daily returns). Worst fall: the largest drop from a high. Longest below a high: the longest stretch before the value got back above an earlier high (or, if it has not yet, until today). Sharpe: return per unit of volatility. Sortino: like Sharpe, but counting only the falls. Calmar: CAGR divided by the worst fall. Higher is better for the three ratios.

Correlation: how closely the daily moves follow SPY’s, from −1 to 1. Up months: the share of calendar months that ended higher. Ratios and alpha use a zero risk-free rate.
